this week we welcome the return of pitchfork scribe, producer and all round good guy philip sherburne who contributes his second mix for the site. as he does this writing thing professionally he's prepared a little preamble for the mix that describes better than we ever could:

"a few weeks ago, there was snow falling in portland, oregon—not enough to stick, but enough to make you wonder if the winter, or even just the ubiquitous northwest grey, would ever break. Then, last saturday, kapow: tulips opened, a snowy mount hood gleamed against a robin's-egg sky, and temperatures soared to 75 degrees—the perfect conditions for an impromptu backyard barbecue. (visiting home, meanwhile, has provided the perfect conditions for pulling out old favorites that had fallen by the wayside, like H3ÖH's astonishing "mind loss" — how could I have forgotten about that track?). the results, more or less "deep" or "house" (or even, sure, "deep house") in nature, are mildly schizophrenic, mixing the bleak and streamlined with the lush and overgrown. call it seasonal dissonance."

finally, this sunday sam is taking leave of his senses and running the paris marathon along with his wife . they are raising money for the lions hospice, an amazing organisation, providing care free of charge to people with serious, life-shortening illnesses. only 18 per cent of their funding comes from the primary care trust, the rest is in donations. if you like to donate in honour of their efforts please go here.

this saturday the 15th march we have invited up and coming label thisisnotanexit down to the amersham arms for a musical bout. alongside a headline dj slot for playgroup main man trevor jackson and live set by new TINAE signing detachments we have a dj set from label head simon a carr. here simon a carr takes us through the mix he's done for the night.

"i've thought about doing a label mix for a while so when the thisisnotanexit vs. allez-allez party idea arose it seemed a good idea to put one together. the mix features some of the music that has already emerged on the label - but the majority of it is forthcoming in 2008 (and therefore exclusive!).

the mix starts with professor genius who released tracks on italians do it better and disques sinthomme last year. number one kickstarts things and flows into the tremendous remix from brennan green featuring a full live reinterpretation with brennan on drums, guitars and everything else! after that its the prins thomas miks of hatchbacks' white diamond which was raptuorously received last year - then into the new they came from the stars i saw them single the HOT inc. remixed by mysterious deep dub disco producer MoscoW (he's just remixing detachments too which is sounding absolutely incredible!).

club silencio are then a new signing from italy and then its into faze action's remix of the new hatchback single jetlag. from there we go into the emperor machine dub remix of signals - what a bassline! - and then the elegance of the naum gabo remix of detachments' fear no fear. following this its the an optimo espacio remix of they came from the stars its time and the demo of lexicons by new signing the dark esquire - a throbbing 132 bpm italo groove. the mix ends with the out there-ness of sculptures' SCRAM and back to where we started with professor genius á jean giraud number five. hope you enjoy it!"

the moroders are two young chaps from dresden whose dj-ing philosophy is "to make people dance to quality tracks, regardless of which genre does it to them." needless to say this earned them a place in our hearts. they run a monthly club in there home town in a tiny sweatbox called altes wettbüro where the capacity is only 150 but "all of them are dancing."

in the past they have featured sets from daniel wang, kaos and runaway and on march 14th we'll be hopping on a plane to play alongside them. if you're in dresden we hope to see you there but as you can tell by this mix you really should be going every month. great djs and lovely guys to boot.

'rat salad' is the alias of dj/ producers leo elstob (mountain of one / faith / people's popular front) and rupert lyddon (grand national - sunday best).....

they've spent the last few months intensively trawling their 50,000 strong record collection and carefully re-editing, re-mastering and re-working everything that fits the rat salad musical junket....
they're using old school tape edits and tracks fed half-speed through prehistoric valve amps / limiters to give them an extra rich sound and a unique rat salad double dollop of wallop!

rob smoughton aka grovesnor is a purveyor of some of the smoothest sounds around. he'll be familiar to many from his excellent track 'nightmoves' which appeared on the hot chip 'dj kicks' earlier this year. this mix he's put together for us give you some idea of where he developed his synth-MOR style once memorably labeled yacht rock.

you can catch the grovesnor live experience this saturday at the allez-allez christmas party at the amersham arms. as well as mr smoughton we have jd twitch and jg wilkes of the world conquering optimo on the decks. anyone who has yet to check out their genre defying, brain melting sets should proceed to the dance-floor forthwith for very possibly a life changing experience.

its pretty much the consensus that THE mix cd of this year was fabric 35 by ewan pearson so we are understandably delighted to bring you this new mix by him. going for a more laid back vibe thats a realtonic at this hectic time or year the mix hits on such allez-allez favourites as can, the solaris soundtrack and the amazing ame remix of etienne jamuet's 'repeat again after me'. it really is one to savor.

on wednesday the 12th its the last KOMPAKT party of 2007 at plastic people and we're rounding it off with a rare and intimate set from renegade production maestro DJ KOZE. widely regarded as one of the most gifted producers working in electronic music today (check his recent remixes for BATTLES and MATTHEW DEAR), KOZE is also a highly regarded DJ whose sets overflow with ideas in the form of loops, clicks, scratches, and effortless genre transitions. we'll be on hand to perform warm up duties. tickets are available on the door or in advance here.

then on saturday the 15th we have our christmas party and as previously mentioned are delighted to be joined by the optimo jocks jd twitch and jg wilkes. also on the bill is 'yacht rock' exponent grovesnor. get on your santa hat and come frug with us. the party is at the amersham arms, starts at 9pm and carries on until 3:30pm and is all for the bargain price of £6 (or £5 to NUS and regular card holders)

"This mix is an Optimo 10th Birthday special featuring many of the records released on their OSCarr record label over the years. As they generally only come out on 12", most people don't know much about these records. Maybe this will perk up your interest. Here's a brief history:

1999 - Roland, the sampler is incorporated into the Optimo ranks and makes her presence instantly felt by allowing lots of exclusive tracks at the club, many of which would help define the early years of Optimo. She quickly takes on a life of her own and get her name put on all of the promotional material and announces all the live acts.

2001 - OSCarr records (Optimo Singles Club and related records) is launched with the release of the legally dubious An Espacio Oddessey hogmanay mix CD and the equally shady 'Remember When We used to Play?" EP, featuring the most requested Roland tracks and a few others. Copies of this 12" have been sold for ridiculous amounts on ebay recently. It also sets an ongoing precedent by by having one track that skips on nearly every copy.

2002 - Electrocla$h arrives and Optimo gets lumped in with it like every other passing genre. Three(!) records come out on OSCarr that year; Bis' Fac 2002 EP, featuring four covers of Factory records hits; Creme De Menthe's EP, which gets Single of The Week in the NME and is proclaimed an electrocla$h classic. Pro Forma's 12" also comes out. Pro Forma's live shows become well regarded as completely fucking nuts in Glasgow and they also play the last night of Optimo at Planet Peach (or Planet Pish as it's known by regulars.) Around this time Roland™ is retired and replaced with a more user friendly, but less sexy Apple Mac.

2003 - Mr. Fred Bigot releases the only record to come out proper on OSCarr; a delicious mix of electro and rockabilly. It's also the only OSCarr release to skip intentionally as it has 3 locked grooves.

2004 - Tired of releasing mix CDs at the Hogmanay (that's new year to anyone not Scottish) party, Twitch and Wilkes decide to give away a split 7" single featuring Liquid Liquid live at the club and a medley of Optimo hits played on the piano by regular punter, Catie Faulds. On the 1st of January 2005, literally hundreds of copies can be found in Renfrew Street where the party was held.

2005 - OSCarr do a deal whereby Tigersushi will help with the release of the records and the catalogue numbers change to OSCTS00xx. There are riots in the streets that another British product has been taken over by Johnny Foriegner. Not really. OSCarr release records by Uter, Park Attack and a split record of glitchy house and techno to promote the off shoot club The Black Rabbit Whorehouse.

2006 - Edinburgh rockstars X Vectors catch everyone's attention with their punk-funk cover of Jamie Principle's 'Your Love'. It's released as the B-side to the OSCarr release 'The Winter of Our Discotheque'. In addition, many things are given catalogue numbers as a tribute to Factory. OSC0013 or 14 is a round of JD and Coke bought at The Sub Club, allegedly.

2007 - After a little tribulation, The Parsonage EP should be released in December. The Parsonage are a 40+ strong choir formed by Optimo's former cash desk assistant Janis Murray and many other friends of the club. They cover old pop classics and even older C&W/blues tracks. Prepare to fall in love.

2008 and beyond? - Who knows. In 2008 OSCarr plans to release records by Big Ned, Mark Hex and Findo Gask. Keep you ears and eyes opened.
